Carl Nathaniel Marcum

Carl Nathaniel Marcum was born 1938 in Kingsport, TN and was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. He was Valedictorian of his high school class at Lynn View high school, played on the High School Basketball team and continued to play basketball for the Ruritan club in to his 30's. While studying undergraduate work for Pharmacy school at ETSU, Carl was president of his freshman class. He graduated from UT Pharmacy school in Memphis, 1956, and was president of Phi Delta Chi fraternity and a member of Rho Chi Honor fraternity.
Carl started Marcum's Pharmacy in 1962 and over 50 years built one of the most successful pharmacies in Tennessee. He was also an active member in the Rotary club for over 40 years.

An active outdoorsman, Carl enjoyed grouse and quail hunting, and had a remarkable bird dog. He was an avid Tennessee Walking Horse breeder. Carl was very active in the Walking horse industry, showed his horses and was on the board of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders & Exhibitors Association. Carl introduced many people to farm life & horses and many will remember him for giving them their first horseback ride.

Carl was generous to family, relatives, friends and customers. Throughout his career as a Pharmacist, he influenced and encouraged many people to pursue the medical field and become Pharmacists, Doctors, and Nurses. Carl has produced a Doctor and many Pharmacists in his own family.

He was a born again Christian, active in Vermont UMC for many years and now a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church. After several years of pain and suffering he was ready, and is finally at peace with his Lord.

Married to his loving wife, Linda White Marcum for 56 years, Carl loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was idolized by them. He loved children and was considered "Grand Buddy" to them all.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Gina Marcum Pinney and husband Fred, Kingsport, TN; son, Dr. Greg Marcum and wife Laura, Gate City, VA; four grandchildren, Colton Marcum and wife Catherine, Hannah Blackwell and husband Brad, Spencer Pinney, and Justice Pinney; two great-grandchildren, Charlsie Marcum and Colton Marcum, II; sister, Thelma Smith and husband Wesley, Kingsport, TN; several nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

The memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Green and Danny Howe officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
