Irene Crigger of Piney Flats, TN, one day shy of 76, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 23, 2014. She was born September 24, 1938, and was a native of Rural Retreat, VA. Irene was an avid softball player, coach and umpire for over 60 years. In retirement she played softball for the senior league traveling team. She was also a gold medal recipient in Softball in the Senior Olympics. Irene never attempted anything in which she didn't excel. She loved the outdoors, boating, gardening and camping. Irene was a wonderful cook.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Anders and Lockie Jones Anders; 4 sisters, Dorothy, Helen, Thelma and Gladys; brother, Elmer; and her beloved dogs, Mindy, Shadow, Princess and Gizzy.
Irene is survived by her son, J.L. Crigger and wife, Gay of Rural Retreat, VA; sister, Hazel Blevins of Rural Retreat, VA; 2 brothers, Junior Anders and wife, Eunice of Maryland, and Tommy Anders and wife, Margaret of Marion, VA; many nieces and nephews; her best friend, Sue Zabala of the home; and best four-legged friend, Foxy of the home.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am at St. Christopher Episcopal Church with The Rev. Margaret Zeller officiating. The family will receive friends following the funeral service.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Saturday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose, VA.
