A. Wayne Peters

A. Wayne Peters, 70, of Kingsport, died on Sunday, May 3, 2009.

He was born on July 22, 1938, in Kingsport. A 1957 graduate of Sullivan High School, Wayne received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Tennessee State University. He also served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He played football for ETSU from 1957-1961, serving as team co-captain. He also played football in the Army for the Fort Benning GA Doughboys.

Wayne later taught and served as an athletics coach at Chattanooga Brainerd High School, Church Hill High School, Blountville Middle School, Ross N. Robinson, and Dobyns-Bennett High School, where he coached football, soccer, track and women's basketball. As a soccer coach at DB, his teams won two state championship titles in 1984 and 1985.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Ketron Peters; an infant daughter, Jennifer Peters; his parents, Rayford "Pete" and Trula Peters; and two sisters, Barbara Rogan and Shirley Murry.

He is survived by his two children, a son, Michael Peters, and a daughter, Leslie Peters Tentler and her husband Robert Tentler, Jr.; one grandson, Michael Brett Peters; a sister and brother-in-law, Sheila Morelock and Roy Morelock; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Nina Ketron and husband Wallace Ketron, Jr. and Wayne Ketron and wife Bonnie Ketron; several nieces and nephews; and a family friend, Evelyn McConnell.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 6th at 6:00 p.m. at the Kingsport Community Church of God. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
