A. M. Smith, Jr. 81, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Monday morning, April 23, 2007, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon for a number of years. He had also served the Lord in the church choir, local ministries, and on international mission trips. Mr. Smith retired from Mead Paper Corporation following 48 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II on the USS Wilkes-Barre Ship CL-103 which was present in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the peace treaty with Japan. He was a Past Master of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge No. 688.
His parents, Arthur M. Smith Sr. and Gladys Smith; a brother John W. Smith; and two sisters, Ruth Gilliam and Nellie Johnson, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Smith, Kingsport; four daughters, Sharon Smith, Knoxville, TN, Kathey Haynes, Kingsport, Brenda Jones and husband, Darryl, Kingsport, Denise Bruner, Kingsport; two sons, Steve H. Smith, North Carolina, Paul Bruner Sr. and wife, Tammy, Kingsport; six grandchildren, Hillary Smith, Kelley Goins, Timmy Haynes, Paul Bruner Jr, Emily Bruner, and Ryan Jones; two sisters, Mildred Rutledge and husband, George, Kingsport, and Mable Jennings, Kingsport; a special nephew, Scott Johnson and wife, Margaret, Las Vegas, Nevada; several other nieces and nephews; and five loving dogs, Chance, Zorro, Winston, Dirty Hairey, and Trixie Montie.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow Wednesday at the funeral home with a Masonic Service by Kingsport Masonic Lodge #688 beginning at 8:00 p.m. Rev. T. Richard Harris and Dr. Frank Crawford will officiate.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with military rites by American Legion Post No. 3/265. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 10:45.
Pallbearers will be Paul Bruner Sr, Paul Bruner Jr., Darryl Jones, C. B. Shanks, Cliff Simpson, and Timmy Haynes. Honorary pallbearers will be George Rutledge, Don Jennings, Larry Gilliam, Clarence Daugherty, and Joel Calloway.
