Abbie Gilliam Meade, 81, Kingsport, passed away Saturday November 14, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born June 23, 1928 in Lee County, VA. She graduated from Pennington Gap High School and came to Kingsport to reside shortly thereafter. She worked at the Mead in her early years and later in life, she was employed at Woolworth, retiring in 1991.
Abbie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kingsport. She loved her church and Sunday School class.
Abbie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Meade; parents, Ed and Pearl Bailey Gilliam; daughter, Abbie Louise Meade; son, Charles Edward Meade; and grandson, Charles Anthony Meade.
Surviving are her daughter, Jamie Nau, Kingsport; son, Harold C. Meade, Kingsport; three granddaughters, Susanne Meade, Erin Nau and fiancé, Jared Peters, and Amber Shepardson and husband, Jared, all of Kingsport; grandson, Jeff Meade and wife, Lois, Kingsport; eight great-grandchildren, Desiree Meade, Howell, MI, Alexis Meade, Kayla Robinson, Montana Meade, Shawna Meade, Logan Meade, Tristan Robinson, and Elijah Peters, all of Kingsport; daughter-in-law, Kay Meade, Kingsport; brother, J. C. Gilliam and wife, Debbie, Lebanon, OH; five sisters, Lucille Anderson and husband, Russell, Kingsport, Bobbie Coffman, Norwood, OH, Georgia Warren, Fall Branch, TN, Paulette Creech and husband, Kenneth, Kingsport, and Christine Hammons and husband, Roger, Weber City, VA; brothers-in-law, Robert Meade and wife, Patty, Kingsport, and Joseph Meade, Lincoln, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Kingsport with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery in Blackwater, VA.
Pallbearers will be Jared Shepardson, John Shepardson, Chris Dowell, Eric Warren, Tony Creech, and Michael Coffman. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Meade, Roger Hammons, Russell Anderson, and Kenneth Creech.
