Alma Lane Ball

Alma Lane Ball, 89, a longtime resident of Kingsport, TN, died Wednesday the 19th of August 2009 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center from complications of congestive heart failure.

Alma was born in 1920 in Knoxville, TN, and later moved to Charlotte, NC with her parents, William "Harry" and Mattie Lane, and three siblings, Leota, Roe, and Carl, where she later received her Associates Degree in Business from Kings College. When she returned to Tennessee she lived in Kingsport and worked for Copeland Office Supply and Glass Electric Furniture.

In Kingsport, Alma met and married Fred E. Ball who worked for Tennessee Eastman Company. They maintained residence in Kingsport, and were active members of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mt. Carmel, TN where Alma led the young adult Sunday School Class for over 30 years.

Alma loved her church family, she loved traveling, and she loved to cook, but most of all she loved her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Ball; and her siblings, Carl "Shady" Lane, D. Roe Lane, and Leota Lane Beatty.

Alma is survived by her two daughters, Freda Ball Welch and Ellen Ball Thomas-Bevington; three grandchildren, Mark Allen Hoyt, Barbra Ellen Matthews, and Heather Thomas-Folliard; as well as four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. Her granddaughter, Heather Thomas-Folliard, Associate Pastor of HillSong Church in Chapel Hill, NC will deliver the gospel message. The family will receive friends following the graveside at the cemetery.
