Andy Byrd Deatherage, 89, 1680 Nelse Roberts Road, died on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at home after an extended illness.

Born in Greene County, the son of the late Ott and Rhea Deatherage, Mr. Deatherage lived in Newport News, VA, from 1961 to 1985, and retired from Marva Maid Dairy. He has been a resident of Greene County for the past 24 years, and is a member of Bethany Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen. the mother of his children, and sister Odle McAmis.

Surviving are his wife Arlene Deatherage; two daughters, Brenda Lockwood and husband William, and Cassie Carpenter and husband Hubert, all of Newport News; three stepchildren, Barbara Ayers, Doug Jones, and Virginia Hite; four grandchildren, Lorna McFatter, Melvin Lentz, Renee Pratt, and Connie Coats; six step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and one beloved friend and nephew, Johnnie Armstrong.

The family will receive friends at the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes on Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00. Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Bethany Freewill Baptist Church, with Rev. Roger Dykes and Rev. Donnie Bailey officiating.

Bill Reed, Jay Bentley, Melvin Lentz, David Maltsburger, Dwayne Coats, Tom Hite, Phil Brown, and Joe Hayslett will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnnie Armstrong and Robert Ayers.
