Anthony M. Nelson, 36, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. Anthony was a graduate of Sullivan South High School where he had excelled in football having earned All State and Prep All American Honors. He was heavily recruited out of high school by all of the major college football programs and eventually signed a letter of intent to play for Coach Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech. While at Virginia Tech he was a member of the runner up National Championship Team that lost to the Florida State Seminoles in the NOKIA Sugar Bowl.
Following his time at Virginia Tech he was employed by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department for over 10 years. While there he received two life-saving medals. He was a member of Fordtown Baptist Church and the Sullivan West Volunteer Fire Department. Anthony was also known for being an extremely good body builder and loved to train young athletes and help them to achieve their athletic goals.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sue Nelson.
Anthony is survived by his daughter, Kenleigh; son, Cooper; father, Ralph Nelson, Sr.; 3 sisters, Romona Dales and husband, Dave, Ruthann Nelson, and Amelia Caldwell; 2 brothers, Scott Nelson and wife, Audrea, and Ralph Nelson and wife, Christy; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-8:00 pm at Indian Springs Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 pm with Dr. Roc Collins and Pastor David Luster officiating.
The graveside service will be conducted on Friday at 11:00 am at East Tennessee Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Nelson, Scott Nelson, Brandon Caldwell, Michael May, Jason Pafford, Gary Crumbley, Dave Dales, Stacy Carter, and Carter and Tyler Nelson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sean Nelson, Cooper Nelson and Jr. Williams.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Anthony Nelson Scholarship Fund c/o Amelia Caldwell, 116 Lebanon Rd. #10, Kingsport, TN 37663.
