Aroas Eugene Bennett, Jr passed on June 4th. Gene was born on June 11, 1925 in Winston-Salem, NC to Aroas E. and Amy Herrick Bennett. He earned BSA's Eagle Scout award as a youth. He later became part of the Greatest Generation when he joined the Army immediately following graduation from R J Reynolds High School. He was a member of 86th "Black Hawk" Infantry Division, 341st Regiment, I Company and fought in France, Belgium, Germany, Austria and the Philippines. He helped to liberate a slave labor camp at Attendorn, Germany in 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct, American Theater, Pacific Theater, EAME Theater with three Battle Stars, Victory, Army of Occupation-Germany and Philippine Liberation medals. Following his military service he graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years Grace Kelly Bennett and their son Clay Eugene Bennett.
He is survived by two daughters Claire B. McKissick (Bob) and Grace L. Bennett; grandchildren Brennan (Kayla) and MaryGrace McKissick, Kimberly B. Russell (Chris) and Cameron Bennett (Sarah); great grandchildren Alex and Emily Russell and Austin Bennett.
A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, June 9th at 1:00 pm at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe, NC.
