A. J. "Junior" Casteel, 81, Kingsport, TN, entered into the arms of Jesus on Friday, February 22, 2008, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Administration Nursing Facility after a long battle with cancer.
He served in the Western Pacific while in the Army during World War II and was employed as a Brakeman/Conductor for 33 years for Clinchfield Railroad.
A. J. was a member of Sullivan Baptist Church where he taught the Senior Men's class. He was an officer of Gideon's International West Camp of Kingsport for many years. A. J. also sang with two different Gospel Quartets, singing with the Switchmen Quartet for 25 years. He was a TSSAA baseball official for 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, E. L. and Mary Blevins Casteel; brothers, Otis, Troy, Mack, and Rev. T. R. Casteel; sister, Carrie Slaughter; daughter, Cathy Mancuso; and grandson, Stephen James Mancuso.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ada Casteel; one daughter, Joan Whitten and husband John; two sons, Larry Casteel and wife Joy, and Mark Casteel and wife Della; six grandsons, Joshua Mancuso and wife Anna, Caleb Mancuso, Tim and Corey Casteel, Max Whitten, Aaron Whitten and wife Kris; three granddaughters, Jennifer Patronilha and husband Mark, Amy Kassen and husband Jeff, and Amanda Lynch and husband Jeremy; one great-granddaughter, Annabel Patronilha; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Sullivan Baptist Church. Services will follow at 7 pm. Monday at the church with Pastor Jeff Strong officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military rites by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the VFW.
Mr. Casteel's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family extends a special thanks to the nurses at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home.
