Arthur Clay Cress, 89, of Winchester, VA, formerly of Kingsport, TN, passed away on, June 18, 2007 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. In November he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Della James Jimmie Cress.
Born in Roda, VA, on May 2, 1918, he served as a Signal Instructor at Norwich University, Montpelier, VT, in the U.S. Army during World War II and was also at Fort Eustis, VA.
Mr. Cress moved to Kingsport, TN. He completed the International Correspondence School in Electrical Technology, retired from Mead Papers, and was a long time member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Cress was a charter member of the Kingsport Chapter of the Mended Hearts and was a volunteer on the Cardiac Unit of Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital. He was a York Rite Mason in Kingsport Lodge #688, was member of the American Legion Hammond Post #3, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Patrick and Minnie Cress; one sister, Marjorie Dean; and a baby sister.
Surviving are son, David Cress and wife Patsy, Winchester, VA.; granddaughter, Sarah Cress Tesdall and husband Daniel, Winchester, VA.; brother, William Cress, Lawton OK.; sisters, Betty Cousins and husband Curtis, Loganville, GA.; Patsy Walker and husband Garfield, Kansas City, MO.; Aileen Lowe, Elizabethton, TN,; special friends, the Bill and Verla Wheeler family, Virgil and Doris Hightower; and several nieces, grand-nieces, nephews and grand-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12-2 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Dr. Ron Davis officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Masonic rites by Kingsport Lodge #688 and military rites by American Legion Post #3/265.
