Barbara Feagins Peavler, of Kingsport, died Friday afternoon, July 13, 2012.
Barbara was born in Knox County, TN and has lived in Kingsport since 1952. She was a Principal at Bennett & Edwards and McInturff, Milligan & Brooks Insurance Agencies, serving as President and Chief Financial Officer at Bennett & Edwards.
She was active in community and civic affairs, serving on several boards, some of which were: Holston Valley Community Hospital; Junior achievement, where she served as President; United Way, serving as Treasurer; Arts Council of Kingsport as Treasurer; Kingsport Tomorrow as Treasurer; President of the Kingsport Safety Council; a graduate of Leadership Kingsport; and Kingsport Emergency Communication District Board Secretary. She was active in the Rotary Club of Kingsport, serving as Club President in 1996 and Assistant District Governor of District 7570 in 2003-2005.
In her trade organizations, Barbara served on the Insurors of Tennessee Board of Directors. Locally, she served as President of the Insurors of Kingsport and two terms as President of the Insurance Women of Kingsport. She was selected by the Big I to serve on the ACORD Program team to improve the insurance distribution system, currently being used by agents and companies throughout the U.S. Barbara was named Tennessee Insurance Woman of the Year in 1976.
She and her husband loved to dance and over the years she served as President of two local dance clubs; the Pandora Dance Club and Mr. & Mrs. Club.
Barbara served eight years on the Board of Directors at Executive Park National Bank now Citizens. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian church, where she has served as an Elder and several other capacities. She served on Holston Presbytery Board of Trustees for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin R. Feagins and Ethel C. Feagins; and her sister, Saundra Feagins Potts.
Surviving are her husband, William A. Peavler, Kingsport; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Lynn and Terilee Schafer Peavler, Jonesborough; grandson, Elijah Michael Peavler, New Orleans, LA; granddaughter, Amanda Cheyenne Peavler, Jonesborough; brothers, Edward R. Feagins, Kenneth R. Feagins, Glen Ray Feagins, and Marvin R. Feagins; sisters, JoAnn Feagins Guthrie and Velma Feagins Wilson.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
