Bernard W. Kerrick, 89, of Kingsport, a retired Minister, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 9, 2013. During his lifetime he wore many hats. Among them were Infantry Regimental Sergeant Major and hotel General Manager. He was born on November 12, 1923 in the Old Fulton section of Richmond, VA, son of Audrey Hord Kerrick and Gladys Moore Kerrick. As a very small lad his desire was to be a cadet at the Old John Marshall High School. This dream was realized when he joined Company E (Class of 1941).
He enlisted in the regular Army prior to World War II and served as an aerial gunner, gunnery instructor, and instructor at the Air Force Central Instructors School in Laredo, TX. After his active duty he helped reorganize the 80th Airborne Division (RES) serving as First Sergeant of Service Co., 318th Airborne Infantry. Later he transferred to the Virginia National Guard and served as Regimental Sergeant Major of 176th Infantry (the famous First Virginia whose units included the Richmond Blues and the Richmond Grays). His last assignment was First Sergeant, Company M, 176th Infantry.
His civilian career was in restaurant and hotel management where he won many honors and commendations. One of his more successful endeavors was managing the largest revolving restaurant in the United States. Following his encounter with Christ in 1975 he left the hotel field because of personal beliefs and pursued his career in cafeteria management. In 1980 he was called to the ministry and received his training through the facilities of the Berean College. After receiving his credentials, his ministerial efforts included Bible teaching, a stint as Chaplain at Blount County, TN, Jail, and Christian writing. His Christian novel, "Tribulation Fighters", was published in 1990. He also shared his Christian testimony on Christian TV and radio programs, as well as personal appearances at Christian businessmen's groups in several southeastern states. Rev. Kerrick was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Clydia (Claudia) Wright Kerrick, two sons; one stepson; six grandchildren; great grandchildren and a brother.
Mr. Kerrick's wishes were to be cremated. We have honored those wishes.
