Bernelle K. Johnson

Bernelle K. Johnson, 101, of Washington County, TN passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016 at Cornerstone Village in Johnson City, where she has resided for the last twelve years. Bernelle was born to Leland E. and Maryland Chase Mitchell in Washington County, TN. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church where she served as a former Sunday School Teacher and Bible School Director. She received her B.S. and M.A. Degrees from East Tennessee State College. Bernelle loved children and retired from teaching at Fall Branch Elementary School in 1980. She was a member of the Washington County Teacher's Association, Program Chairman for A.C.E. group of Educators and received a Life Membership in the PTA.

In addition to her parents, Bernelle was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde L Mitchel; first husband, Clyde Keys; and second husband, Coy B Johnson.

Bernelle is survived by nieces, Joyce M. Callahan (Clarence) of Bristol, TN and Mary Sue Wilson (Dale) of Rogersville, TN; great nieces, Teresa Strickler of Kingsport, TN, Tina Whiteaker of Bristol, TN, Rebekah Harris of Kingsport, TN, and Sarah Renner of Kingsport, TN; and great nephew, Matthew Wilson of Jonesborough, TN.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2016, at Hamlett-Dobson in Fall Branch, TN. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Pastor Steve Pate officiating.

Burial will follow at Bacon-Kinchloe Cemetery in the Harmony Community.

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful staff at Cornerstone Village for their tender care, love and respect for Bernelle. Also, thanks to Amedisys Hospice for their kindness and care during her final days.
