Betty H. Andersen, 78, of Kingsport, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center surrounded by her three children.

Betty had resided in the Tri-Cities area her entire life. She was born in Bristol, Virginia on May 19, 1929, a daughter of the late Elmer H. and Kate C. Hammer. She married John Andersen of Bristol, VA, on October 17, 1951, and they moved to Kingsport in 1968. He preceded her in death in 2006.

Surviving are her three children, Bill Andersen and his wife, Jane; Adrienne Andersen and her husband, Jeff Moore; and Karen Arnold and her husband, William; four grandchildren which include Jason Leonard, Alice Leonard, Will Andersen, and John Arnold; a brother-in-law, Alex E. Andersen, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church. She was active in many community and civic activities, particularly the Kingsport Literacy Council where she was a founding board member and served as President.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday at St. Dominic Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be conducted at 12 noon with Rev. Charles Burton and Rev. William Casey officiating.

Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, TN.

Pallbearers will be her three grandsons, two sons-in-law, and two nephews?Colby H. Springer and Alex E. Andersen, III.

The family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Mohammed Arif Shaikh, Dr. Lesley Jones, and the medical staff of the Intensive Care Unit C100 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Literacy Council of Kingsport, 326 Commerce Street, Kingsport, TN 37660.
