Betty Spears Cookenour, 72, of Brookhaven Drive in Kingsport, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 6, 2009, following a period of declining health. Sister Betty was an Apostolic and attended Faith Apostolic Church in Church Hill. She was a homemaker.

She was the daughter of the late Kelly Spears and Mattie Hammonds Spears. In addition to her parents, husband, J.C. Cookenour, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a step-daughter, Janet Southerland of Kannapolis, NC; son Tony and wife Gretchen Cookenour of Kingsport; daughter Sherry Cookenour of Kingsport, daughter Terri Neeley and husband Ricky of Kingsport, daughter Kim Lane and husband Randy of Gate City, VA, daughter Tammie Johnson and husband Everett of Kingsport, and Jodie Blazier and husband Kevin of Meadowview, VA; grandsons Travis Neeley and wife Amy of Kingsport, Justin Lane and wife Jessie of Church Hill, Dustin Cookenour of Kingsport, Cody Cookenour and wife Destiny of Kingsport, Rick Neeley of Kingsport, Chad Hicks of Kingsport, and Mason Blazier of Meadowview, VA; granddaughters, Brandy Sproles of Kingsport, Jacey Lane of Gate City, VA, Chasidy Hicks of Kingsport, Maria Cookenour of Kingsport, and Mackenzie Blazier of Meadowview, VA; great-granddaughter Makenna Neeley of Kingsport, great-grandson Jordan Sproles of Kingsport, great-granddaughter Brooklyn Sproles of Kingsport, and great-granddaughter Kylie Nelson of Kingsport. She is also survived by a brother, Paul Spears of Kingsport; sister Freta Wilson of Kingsport, and sister Thressa Tipton and husband Ed of Weber City, VA.

The funeral services for Sister Betty will be conducted on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, with Rev. Chris Cody officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Graveside services and interment will be conducted at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Mountain Home, TN, with Rev. Chris Cody officiating. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearer will be her grandson, Chad Hicks.

Betty's family would prefer that any flowers and/or memorial you may wish to bestow go to Faith Apostolic Church; 110 E. Main Boulevard; Church Hill, TN 37642.
