Elizabeth "Betty" Platt, 85, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was born February 28, 1923, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Kathleen and Everett Andrews. She moved with her family to Elmhurst, Illinois, at the age of five and graduated from York High School in Elmhurst. Mrs. Platt attended the University of Illinois at Champaign and also worked at Chanute Air Force Base during World War II. She also served as a Nurses Aide during the war.
Mrs. Platt was a longtime member of the American Cancer Society and served as their secretary for many years. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels for twenty-five years and was a member of the Kingsport Junior Book Club and Ridgefields Country Club. She served as secretary of the Archives of the City of Kingsport and served on that board for many years.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph Sears Platt; her parents; one sister, Mrs. Robert Schneider of Champaign, Illinois; and one brother, Dan Andrews, of South Bend, Indiana.
Surviving are four childrena"a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Jim Hamrick of Alexandria, Virginia, a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Donna Platt of Memphis, Tennessee, a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Leila Platt of Brentwood, Tennessee; a son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Sandi Platt of Yorktown, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Penny Hamrick, Jane Watson and husband Tim, Chip Hamrick, Mary Ann Smith and husband Will, Ben Platt, Elaine Platt, Roger Platt, Michael Platt, Adam Platt; one great-grandson, Carter Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family graveside service at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Burton officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
