Bill Lewis, 87, Harmony Community, Jonesborough, TN, passed away at the VA Hospital on Monday, September 7, 2015 after a period of declining health.
Mr. Lewis was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in Korea as a Sergeant. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Metal with 3 bronze service stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and named Man of the Year in 2013.
He retired from Eastman Kodak after 33 years of service. He and his wife, Anne, owned and operated a dairy farm for over 40 years. Bill was an avid sports fan and played softball for the Harmony Ruritan until the age of 72. He was a lifelong member of Valley View United Methodist Church serving as a lay speaker and in various ministries in the church over the years. He was a member of Sulphur Springs Community Chest, Harmony Baptist Senior Citizens and Washington County Cattlemen's Association.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anna Ruth Hite Lewis; son, Jerry Lee Lewis; brothers, Fred, JC, Alvin and Dean Lewis; sisters, Lillian Fulwiler, Evelyn Fulwiler and Kathleen Jesse; and parents, Everett and Ola Kate Lewis.
He is survived by daughter, Fredna Smith and husband, John; son, Billy Joe "BJ" Lewis and wife, Kathie; two granddaughters, Kalen Lewis and Kara Lewis; sister-in-law, Ethel Lewis; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8:00 pm at Harmony Baptist Church, Jonesborough, and at other times at the home of his son. Service will be at 8:00 pm with Pastor Steve Pate officiating. Music will be provided by Sunnyside.
A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday at 1:00 pm at Sulphur Springs Cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Posts 3/265.
Pallbearers will be Steve Lewis, Ricky Lewis, Corey Brown, Matthew Lewis, Kary Gentry, Ben Brinkley and Robert Rodgers.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Mike Lewis, Don Lewis, Ronnie Hale, Jim Barnette, Caden Cox, R.H. Hensley, Kelly Glass and Darren Sherfey.
Special thanks to the VA Ward C, ICU and PICU nurses and doctors who cared for him in his last days and to the staff of Christian Care Center, Johnson City.
