Bill Conway Powell, 73, passed away and went to be with the Lord, Thursday, May 9, 2013.
After a long battle with many health issues, Bill is finally with no more pain and in the arms of his heavenly Father. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Judy Fugate Powell. Along with Judy, he is survived by two daughters, Kim Wilson and husband Gregg, Terri Rogers and husband Scott; two sons, Billy Powell and wife Lisa and Brian Powell. Bill was the proud grandfather of grandsons, Sean Wilson, Devon Wilson, Cameron Wilson, Ben Rogers (USMC) and Dylan Powell; granddaughters, Sarah Owens and Paige Powell; and great-grandson, Briley Wilson. All still reside in the Kingsport area.
Bill was employed at Eastman where he retired after 35 years of service. He was an avid sportsman and loved to coach Lynn Garden youth in younger days. He coached several teams in many sports, including baseball, tee ball, basketball and girls' softball.
He was also a hobby drag racer in the late 60's and early 70's, where he was sponsored by local businesses and competed at all the area drag strips.
Bill was a Christian and a member of Maranatha Baptist Temple where he served as deacon and treasurer. He loved to attend church and loved all the members. He was especially fond of his pastor, David Newland and his family.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Powell Mullins; his father, Marion Powell; his stepfather, Morgan "Moon" Mullins; and a half-brother, Allie Marion Powell.
Bill had many special friends and liked to speak of them often. His favorite times were picnicking at Eastman Recreation area or sitting on his back patio watching his grandchildren growing up and playing in his back yard. He loved his family and never parted ways without taking the opportunity to tell them that he loved them.
The family will receive friends Monday, May 13th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport and also at the home of Terri Rogers. Services will follow visitation at 8 p.m. with Pastor David Newland and Rev. Richard Willis officiating. Special music will be by violin soloist, Ben Rogers.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14th, at Goshen Valley Cemetery in Church Hill. Family and friends will assemble at 10 a.m. At the funeral home to go in procession.
Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dylan Powell and Briley Wilson.
