Billy Lee Shanks, 84, of Kingsport, died late Thursday evening, September 4, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Greene County, he had lived in Sullivan Gardens since 1952.
He served in the U. S. Navy on the USS Iowa during World War II and retired from Mason-Dixon where he was an over-the-road truck driver. Billy was a member of Sullivan Baptist Church.
His parents, Ray and Gladys Shanks; a brother, Sammy Shanks; and a niece, Terri Dean preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline Gibbons Shanks; three sons, Gary Wayne Shanks and wife Vickie of Kingsport; Patrick Lee Shanks and Tammy of Kingsport; Tim Ray Shanks and wife Candy of Ft. Myers, Florida; eight grandchildren, Chris Sturgill, Trevor Shanks, Brad Shanks, Drew Shanks, Dustin Shanks, Mindy Shanks, Shauna Shanks, Ciria Fildego; two brothers, Tommy Shanks and Frank Shanks, both of Sullivan Gardens; two sisters, Lois Shanks and Betty Shanks of Sullivan Gardens; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mack Dunford, Loy Faulk, Marvin Hines, and Alan Bell.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Strong and Trevor Shanks officiating. Andy Creech and Andy Coffman will provide music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at East Lawn Memorial Park with military rites by American Legion Post No. 3/265. Pallbearers will be grandsons and brothers.
