Bobby Jack Alvis, 78, passed away Monday, October 26, 2015. Jack was born in Rogersville, TN and moved to Kingsport when he was 7 years old. After graduating from Dobyns-Bennett HS and East Tennessee State College, Jack served as an officer in the United States Army in Germany. When he returned to Kingsport, he married the girl next door, and in July they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Together they had two amazing daughters and became Nana and PopPop to five beautiful granddaughters. Jack worked at Eastman in Plant Protection for over 30 years, retiring in 1999.
Jack loved his family and the Lord. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, and the thousands of hours he spent volunteering with the Boys Scouts of America, Kingsport Area Safety Council, the Dobyns-Bennett HS Marching Band and Habitat for Humanity. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where he held many positions. Two, which made him most joyous, were Deacon and RA Director (His daughters proudly and laughingly called him "Deacon Daddy").
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Ruby and Ray Alvis and his son-in-law Keith Wood. He is survived by his wife Carol Newland Alvis, their daughters Catherine Wood and Karen Ellis, her husband Brian, and their granddaughters Emily, Ellen, Anna and Claire Wood and Mattie Ellis. Survivors also include Jack's two brothers, Bill and his wife Jean, and Charles and their families, as well as several cousins.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 29 from 5-7 PM at First Baptist Church, Kingsport. A celebration of life service will follow at 7 pm with Rev. Marvin Cameron and Rev. Mitchell W. Whisnant officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church of Kingsport, 200 W. Church Circle Kingsport, TN 37660.
