Buford L. McAmis changed houses on March 10, 2014, at Unicoi Community Hospital in Erwin, TN.
He was born February 23, 1928 in Greene County, TN. He was saved March 2, 1972 in a Thursday night prayer meeting at his home church. He began preaching in July 1974. He pastored and helped build Halewood Freewill Baptist Church in North Carolina. The McAmis Quartet sang in churches and meetings in TN, NC, VA & KY for 23 years. He and his wife had a nursing home ministry for many years at Hillside Manor, preaching and singing on Sunday and Tuesday mornings. He was a member of the Pentecost Independent Freewill Baptist Church. He served four years in the U.S. Navy. He retired from AFG glass plant in Hawkins County.
Buford was preceded in death by his father and mother, George and Lydia McAmis; daughter, Deborah Thompson, and daughter-in-law, Robin McAmis.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Reba Jean; daughter, Andrea and husband Bobby Johnson; sons, Eddie and wife, Teresa, Danny and late wife, Robin; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph McAmis; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
The body will lie in state from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014, at the Pentecost Independent Freewill Baptist Church. The service will follow at 12:00 pm. with Pastor Eddie McAmis and Evangelist Shelton Meade officiating.
Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by The American Legion Posts 3/265.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, David, Jonathan, Drew, Dylan, Dalton, and great-nephews, Brian, and Benjamin. Honorary pallbearers will be his former Young Adult Sunday School Class.
