Burl Dayton Cox

Burl Dayton Cox, 82, of Gray, TN, left this life for a better one on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. He was born on September 21, 1931 on his parent's farm (the late Dayton and Mamie Cox) in Fordtown; he moved to Gray Station in 1939 and lived there the rest of his life. He worked at Eastman Kodak for 33 years until his retirement in 1985. Burl was an avid hunter, fisherman, and farmer for most of his life. He was also a lover and respecter of nature and animals and was never without a pet. He was a unique individual who was loved by his family and will be sorely missed. Mr. Cox was of the Brethren faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Stephen Cox, brother, Carl Cox and beloved aunt, Blannie Cox.

Burl is survived by his daughter, Linda Cox Story and husband, David of Kingsport; son, Jeffrey "Barney" Cox of Cleveland, TN; grandchildren, Jason Wamsley and wife, Tiffany of Charleston, SC, Elizabeth Wamsley of Nashville, TN, David Story, Jr. of Kingsport, TN, Justin Cox and wife, Anne of Atlanta, GA, and Garrett Cox of Chicago, IL; great-granddaughter, Vivian Cox of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Shirley Castlevecchi of Knoxville, TN, and Linda Hamilton and husband, Sam of Kingsport, TN; and beloved pet, "LadyBug."

Family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-6:30 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 6:30 with Pastor Russell Payne officiating. Special vocal and fiddle music will be provided by Aynsley Porchak.

Graveside services will be conducted on Friday at 11:00 am at Gray Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Story, Jr., Jason Wamsley, Gary Simmons, Stanton Goforth, Jim Parker and Pat Story. Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Hamilton and Billy McCray.
