C.L. Evans, a Kingsport resident of more than half a century, died in the Macon County General Hospital on Wednesday. He was born in Butler, Tennessee on May 20, 1921.
He was the second child of Clevo Leonard and Gertrude Norris Evans and in 1944 married Ruth Davis of Kingsport, who predeceased him after sixty-two years of marriage.
A Technical Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps serving in Iceland, England, and France during and in the aftermath of World War II. Mr. Evans retired from the Mason-Dixon Lines after four decades of service to its administration. C.L. was an avid pianist from boyhood, and was also a cellist in the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra and a member of its board. He also directed the choirs of several churches in East Tennessee and at his death, a long-serving senior deacon of the First Baptist Church of Kingsport. He was also a dedicated golfer and served in retirement as a volunteer Ranger at Warrior's Path State Park golf course.
Mr. Evans leaves his and Mrs. Evans' three children, Roger Evans, of New York, NY; Jane Evans and husband Don Smith, of DeBary, FL; Michael Evans and wife Catherine, of Nashville; three grandchildren, Melissa Hunt, of Orlando, FL; Robert Evans, of Memphis; and Daniel Evans, of Denver, CO; and one great-grandchild, Savannah Evans.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Kingsport on Saturday at 3:00p.m. with Rev. Mitch Whisnant officiating.
Entombment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum with military rites provided by Post 3/265 of the American Legion. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Kingsport.
