Carl T. Childress, 85, of Kingsport, TN, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019, at 12:37 p.m. at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born and raised in Sullivan Gardens and a 1953 graduate of Sullivan High School, a 1957 graduate of East Tennessee State College, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant U.S. Army. Carl was a very loving father, grandfather, and a devoted husband and brother. In addition to his dedication to his family, he enjoyed working on his family farm. He was a math teacher and a high school basketball coach for nearly 40 years and spent his retirement attending local sporting events, bargain hunting at flea markets, and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Martha; and two brothers, Fred and Frank Childress.
Carl is survived by three daughters, Carla Childress and partner Julie Eldridge of Kingsport, Alice Crowley and husband Artell of Nantucket Island, MA, and Dottie Stump and husband Mark of Johnson City; two grandchildren, Zachary and Hannah Stump of Johnson City; nephew, Chip Childress of Kingsport TN; nieces, Cathy Childress of Kingsport, TN, and Evelyn Thrasher of Bowling Green, KY; and sister-in-law, Dot Holmes of Bowling Green, KY.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Richie Hayes officiating.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan C. Bailey, Artell B. Crowley, Mark W. Stump, Zachary W. Stump, Chip Childress, and Randy Holland.
