Carl Joseph Musial, 98, of Kingsport, TN, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, after a brief illness. Carl lived most of his life in Scarbro, WV.

Before enlisting in the Army, Mr. Musial was a proud member of the Sunset Ramblers, a musical ensemble, where he played the fiddle for many dances and broadcasted from a Charleston, WV radio station on a weekly basis. During WWII, Carl was a tank transmission mechanic in the 991st Ord. Heavy Maintenance Division, serving in North Africa. After his tour of duty, Carl returned to Scarbro, WV where he worked as an auto body repairman in the Oak Hill, WV area. He moved to Tennessee in 2006 to be close to family but always called West Virginia home.

Born October 8, 1912 in Eccles, WV, he was the only son of the late Frank and Mary Anna Gurkowski Musial. He was preceded in death by his wife Winona Wykle Musial, son Dennis L. Denny Criss, and three sisters Laura Kane, Edna Dziedzic and Hattie Sokola.

He is survived by a son Gary Ray Criss and wife Alice, daughters, Linda Knox and husband Michael, Jan Cogar, Judith Anne Burmer and husband Michael, twelve grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many friends and loved ones, and his best friend Johnny Wilson.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home chapel, with Roger Winegar officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

An entombment service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, WV, with Rev. Joe Kuperson officiating and military honors being provided by the VFW Post No. 3310.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael Burmer, Mickey Burmer, Jesse Hopson, Donald McCarthy, Kenneth Apps, and Benjamin Mauney.

The family wants to extend deep appreciation to the staff of Emeritus in Kingsport and Smoky Mountain Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be made to the Smoky Mountain Hospice, 106 Ferrell Avenue Suite #1, Kingsport, TN 37663.
