Carrie Powell Jones died Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Preston Place Suites in Kingsport. She was born November 26, 1917, in Fries, VA, and lived there until moving to Kingsport in 1927.
Mrs. Jones attended Peabody College in Nashville and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Education in 1939 from State Teachers College ETSU in Johnson City. She taught in the City Schools of Kingsport before moving to Washington, DC, in the early forties where she worked for the United States Government in the General Services Administration Office of Administration and the Office of Personnel as a member of the Personnel Management Staff.
After retiring in the early seventies, Mrs. Jones and her husband moved to Boca Raton, FL, where she continued to live until her death. She was a member of the Congressional Church of Boca Raton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Pearl Powell; husband, Stanley Jones, who was an architectural engineer for the United States Government; four sisters, Pauline Peppers, Hazel Hovis, Bernice Sadler, and Lillie Mae Echols; and two brothers, Maurice Powell and Charlie Powell.
Mrs. Jones is survived by one sister, Aleen Steadman; two sisters-in-law, Jean Powell and Kitty Powell; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. A graveside service, officiated by Roger Hodges, will be conducted the following day at Oak Hill Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m.
