Cary Maynard Grabar, age 83, wife of Joseph Nicholas (Nick) Grabar, Jr., died at home on Thursday, April 24, 2025. In her last days, she was surrounded by family and close friends.
Born on February 24, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Sadie Maynard of Belton, SC. She attended Hollins College where she majored in Organ Performance and spent a long career sharing her gift of music with congregations in worship, particularly Saint Timothy’s Episcopal and Mayfair United Methodist Churches. She taught piano for many years, was involved in the community, and helped lead the yearly music festival for piano students. Cary was fluent in French, having travelled for a year abroad in France during college.
She and her husband Nick enjoyed 59 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband and her three children and spouses: Katherine Grabar, Alison Meredith and Tim, Joe Grabar and Corey. Additionally, she has twelve grandchildren: Sylvia Hayes, Peter Meredith, Nick Meredith, Watson Grabar, Tom Meredith, Sam Meredith, Dylan Grabar, Rex Grabar, Rob Meredith, Timothy Rex Meredith, Sadie Ann Grabar, and Daphne Grabar. She also has two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers: Rex Maynard and Albert Maynard.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 2025 at First Broad Street United Methodist Church in Kingsport, TN.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to her home church, First Broad Street United Methodist Church (tagged for Missions/Faith-Promise) at 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660 or to Kingsport Music Club, 5 Pendleton Place, Kingsport, TN 37664.
