Charles "Charlie" Washington Carey, 89, passed away at home in the care of his immediate family in Greeneville, Tennessee, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2013. He was born in Richton, Mississippi, on August 2, 1923.
He graduated from Hemphill Diesel College and used those skills to design an aluminum tug boat for Florida's shallow waterways and as an owner operator of a mobile welding service in Bellville, Texas. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and mechanics. He served as a U.S. Navy mechanic in WWII in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Saipan, and Guam.
He is survived by his much-loved wife, Elsie Louise Matteson; his two daughters, Pamela Carey Willson and husband Gary Evan Willson of Houston, Texas, and Tamela "Tami"
Carey-Kretz and husband Richard Kretz of Greeneville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Laura, Sarah and Phillip Pinell of Church Hill, Tennessee; his sister, Naomi "Dolly" Edwards; and brothers, Roy and Glenn Carey residing in Mississippi.
The graveside service will be at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tennessee, at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2013. Military honors will be performed by the Color Guard.
