Charlie grew up in Kingsport where he learned to play the drums and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School. Career opportunities eventually took Charlie to Charlotte, NC, where he earned a position with Phillip Morris as a systems analyst, a position at which he worked for over 20 years. Charlotte was also the place where he won the heart of his wife, Janie.

Preceding Charlie in death were his wife, Janie Ciccolella Ferrell, and his brother, Jonathan Frank Ferrell.

Survivors include his fiancee Bridget Gallagher of Harrisburg, PA; parents, Bobby R. and Peggy Ferrell, both of Kingsport; sisters Robbin Skinner and her husband Marty of Charlotte, NC, and Leslie Latture and husband Gary of Kingsport; stepson, Andrew Clark and fiancee eLisha Hunt of Charlotte; and an enormous and eclectic collection of friends and other relatives.
