Charles Garnet Fleming, 77, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Thursday evening, February 11, 2010. He died unexpectedly due to an apparent heart attack.
Charles was born in Jenkins KY, the son of Butler and Lillie Fleming and was of the Baptist faith. During his teen years he came to Kingsport where he resided for the rest of his life. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. local #934, last working at TVA.
Charles was proud of his military service, having served during the Korean War in the U.S. Army. He was a charter member and at one time chairman of the Appalachian Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Association, now called the Ross Carter/Appalachian Chapter. He was a member of the American Legion Post #3 and life time member of the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382. He loved any type of music and played the alto and tenor saxophone, and the clarinet. While in the service, he played in the 440th Army Band at Ft. Bragg. Later he played in the Kingsport Community Band. Another interest he had was reading books about history. Recently he attended ETSU taking history courses.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Meade, Faustina Gilliam, and Pauline Roman; three brothers, Oren, Hoflin and Freddie Fleming.
Surviving are his wife, Sunya Britts Fleming of the home; daughter, Amy Gray and husband Wally of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Amanda, Brittany, and Lily Gray; brother, Jack Fleming and wife Audrey of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Charles Lippse officiating.
Military graveside rites will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park by American Legion Post 3/265.
