Charles B. "Chuck" McVey was born in Monmouth, IL, on August 24, 1922, and passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at Asbury Place at Baysmont, Kingsport, TN, after an extended illness.
Chuck graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He began his working career at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY. Shortly after joining Kodak, he was sent to Oak Ridge, TN, where he worked on the development of the atomic bomb. He moved to Kingsport with his family in 1960, where he worked at Eastman Chemical Company until his retirement.
Those who were fortunate enough to know Chuck were privileged to know a kind and generous man, a great friend, a loving family man who loved the Lord, his life, and his music. He derived his energy from being with people, and his contagious smile and zest for life made being with him very special.
One of his loves was music . . . a talented jazz trumpet player, he was happiest when he was playing either with his own small band, the "Has-Beens" Orchestra, or just in his own home playing all the big band tunes.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, the mother of his children, Alice; his beloved parents, Mildred Lewis McVey and Frank R. McVey; and his brother, Bob McVey.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; two daughters, Judy Padgett and husband, Walt of St. Paul, VA, and Jane McVey of Fairfax, VA; three grandchildren, Seth Padgett and wife, Laura, of Abingdon, VA, Ali Padgett and Ryan Padgett, both of St. Paul, VA; special cousins, David Smith and Marge Carlson.
The family will receive friends at First Broad Street United Methodist Church from 5:00 to 7:00 on Thursday, September 16. Services will follow at 7:00, with the Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the music department of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 East Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660, or to the University of Illinois Foundation, 1305 West Green Street, MC-386, Urbana, IL 61801, for band scholarships for deserving students.
