Charles Lessley Newland, son of the late Lessley and Theo Blanch Gaines Newland, died September 9, 2022 at home, the home in which he was born and lived his entire life. Charles married JoAnn Perry in 1969. They had the joy of four daughters.

He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of twelve and became a member of the Arcadia Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He attended Arcadia Elementary School, Blountville High School and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Following graduation from University of Tennessee, he assisted his father in the management of the family farm. He managed the farm following his father’s death.

Charles was active in the agricultural activities of the county, church activities and community clubs. He delighted sharing information of the history of this area and its people.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, JoAnn; daughters, Emily Louise Newland of Kingsport, Judith Ann Newland Birkey (Jim) of Minier, Illinois, Heidi Anne Rose Wilson (Kirk) of Kingsport, Kathleen Joy Rose Wagner (John) of Kingsport; brother-in-law, Jack Wagner of Fairmont Georgia; grandchildren, Katie Rose, Lydia Hope, Kevin Matthew Wilson, all of Kingsport, Jesse William Birkey, Lilah Theodora Birkey of Minier, Illinois and many exceptional nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at Hamlett Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.  A private family graveside service will take place at the Newland Family Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11am on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at Arcadia Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joel Kavanaugh and Rev. Larry Stallard.

Guestbook

Charles was a wonderful mentor and a great example of an honest man living for Christ Jesus.
He was a blessing in my life. He laughed at my dumb jokes, too.
Prayers for Jo Ann and the family.

We so appreciate Mr. Newland's historical knowledge of the community and his involvement with Exchange Place. He will truly be missed, but we will continue to remember him fondly at Exchange Place.

Joann and family,
I am so sorry for your loss, but so happy for Charles as he entered into heaven upon his wonderful testimony of Jesus Christ as his Savior.
I was raised up on Timbertree and knew Charles most of my life. I attended Bible School at Arcadia Presbyterian Church and was a part of many youth events led by Charles there at the church. I also had interaction with Charles and his family as a neighbor and friend. I had the privilege of speaking to Charles just before He died and had prayer with him over the phone. He was moved when I shared with him that his life had much bearing on me to receive Christ as my Savior. I so much wanted to attend the healing service but was hindered in that we had our church homecoming on that day. No matter, because even though his body was not healed as we wanted, the Lord has healed him of all his diseases now in heaven. On the resurrection day, his bdy will be raised, and the soul will have a new body that will never have sickness or pain.
Now, he and my uncle Claude Osborne, who was his school mate, are united together in heaven. Soon we will all. who have the same hope in Christ, join them.
May God bless you and your family at this hour of grief with the assurance of being united together in heaven forever.

JoAnn and family...Jack and I pray for the peace that can only come from our Heavenly Father to overshadow each of you during this time. Charles was an Arcadia Icon. Many, many of my childhood memories are interwoven with the Newland family. Many stories from generations before me are connected, as well, with the Newlands. Of course, Mother always insisted the very best thing that happened to the Newlands was when Charles married you. That still brings a smile. Keeping you and family in our prayers during the upcoming days. Jack and Patsy Jackson Lloyd
