Charlie Sine died in hospice care at Holston Valley Medical Center on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at age 102. He was born November 4, 1909 in Johnston City, Illinois, the son of Charles A. Sine, Sr., and Mary Jane Carson Sine.
He grew up in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and attended the University of Chicago where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Charlie continued his undergraduate studies at The National Business College of Roanoke, Virginia. Ruth and Charlie moved to Kingsport where he began his career at Tennessee Eastman in 1934, retiring forty years later in 1974. Charlie's passion was working with the Boy Scouts of America where he greatly influenced the lives of many young men. He spent years volunteering as a leader and was a well known figure at Camp Davy Crockett where he worked with a group of volunteers who kept the camp in first class condition. He served the scouts in many ways including Scoutmaster, commissioner, leader in the Order of the Arrow and regional leader in the Order of the Arrow. He received the highest civilian honor awarded in scouting, the Silver Beaver.
As a member of the National Rifle Association, her served as a referee and was the recipient of several marksmen competition awards. His community involvement included active membership in the Kingsport Kiwanis Club.
Bethel Presbyterian Church held his membership for over sixty years. He served as an elder and clerk of session as well as contributing in whatever capacity was needed while he was physically able. Charlie leaves a legacy of service to others above self and devotion to God and family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Ruth Hurd Sine; his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Cameron; and his son, Charles D. "Buddy" Sine.
Charlie is survived by daughter-in-law, Grace Anna Sine; eight grandchildren, Lydia Faulkner, William "Chip" Cameron, Suzanne Cameron, Chris Cameron, Dolly Drawdy, Polly Wehmann, Charles D. "Chuck" Sine, and Pamela Degges; 19 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; niece, Jill Quinley and other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kaye Florence officiating.
