Cherie Shellnutt Monson

Cherie Shellnutt Monson, of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, January 22nd after a hard fought battle with cancer. Cherie hailed from Long Beach, California, and was the daughter of Marjorie Shellnutt and the late Jack Shellnutt. Cherie graduated from University of Nebraska Omaha with a degree in political science in 1989. After receiving a Woodruff Fellowship, Cherie enrolled at Emory University School of Law in 1989, and graduated with her Juris Doctor in 1992.  Cherie enjoyed a long career, practicing as a litigation attorney with Wilson Worley Moore Gamble and Stout in Kingsport for over a decade, with legal victories across the state of Tennessee and in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Cherie joined Eastman Credit Union in Kingsport in 2006, where she served as Vice President, General Counsel. There she grew and developed ECU’s legal department alongside her wonderful coworkers.  Cherie was actively involved in Legal Aid of East Tennessee, which provides free legal services to underserved individuals in East Tennessee.

Cherie will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and friend, and a brilliant attorney.

Cherie is survived by her husband of 15 years, Kris, her mother Marge, her son Daniel, his wife Andrea, and their children Scarlett and Magnus, her son Zachary and his wife Melissa, and her son Thaddeus and his wife Lauren. She is also survived by her stepson Robert, his son Anen, her stepdaughter Susan and her wife Alice, and their daughter Kylie. She is also survived by her brother Jim and her sister Laurie, and her nieces Chelsea and Sara, and her nephew Chance.

Memorial services will be conducted at Holston Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on Friday, January 25th, at 4:00pm.
