Cleo Irene (Betty) Shoemaker, born on June 2, 1927 in Drill, Virginia, 88, passed away on September 11, 2015 at Brookdale Senior Living Colonial Heights after a lengthy illness. She retired from Kingsport Press (Arcadia Graphics) and spent her time gardening and tending to her beautiful roses. She enjoyed many travels with her husband and friends. Betty was devoted to her Christian faith and was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Cynthia Lockhart; sister, Patty Sue Cole; brothers, Robert Lockhart, Frank Lockhart, and David Lockhart; and seven half-brothers and half-sisters.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Lawrence E. Shoemaker, of the home; sisters, Thelma Honaker of Wooster, OH., Madeline (Peggy) Ubernosky of Houston, TX., Joyce Grills (Bob) of Kingsport, TN., Wanda Johnson (Roy) of Kingsport, TN., and Brenda Phillips (Bobby) of Jonesborough, TN.; brothers, Thomas Lockhart, and Allen Baker Lockhart (Joann); brother-in-laws, John Shoemaker, Frank Shoemaker (Margaret), and Conley Smith of NC.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many, many friends.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Chris Lockhart officiating. The family and friends will gather at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
