Clovis Eugene Yates

Clovis Eugene Yates, 81 went to be with his wife Jeanette, Saturday, morning December 14, 2013, at his home. His daughter and son were by his side.

Born in Honaker, VA, he was a retired self-employed brick mason, having built many homes in East TN and Southwest VA. Clovis was a past President and member of the Gravely Ruritan Club. He was a member of the Sullivan County Election Commission, working the polls for many years. His favorite pastimes were making apple butter and attending auctions. He enjoyed rebuilding farm wagons. Clovis was a loving father, Papaw, and Great Papaw.

He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-eight and a half years, Maudie Jeanette; parents, Everett and Daisy Yates; brothers, Carl, Gilmer, and Everett, Jr.; sisters, Lois Flowers, Vernie Honaker, and Gaynell Stump.

Clovis is survived by his daughter, Mary Sloan and husband, Mike; son, Clovis Allen Yates; six grandchildren, Trish and Tawn Yates, Martinsville, VA, Josh Yates and girlfriend Brooke, Kingsport, Amanda Sloan, Kingsport, Staff Sgt. Jon Yates and wife, Brittany, Fort Drum, NY, and Caitlin Yates, Gate City, VA; four great-grandchildren, Brayden, Alex, Colton and Jaycie; daughter-in-law, Tammy Yates; sisters, Alice Kestner, Kingsport, Ann Cumbow, Bristol, TN, Margie Honaker and Charlene Deel, Honaker, VA; brothers, Hubert Yates and wife, Frances, Honaker, VA, Clarence Yates and wife, Earlene, Council, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Gale Hartley and James Fields, Sr., officiating.

The graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at East Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Josh Yates, Staff Sgt. Jon Yates, Billy Fields, Joey Fields, Robin Ketron, Mike Hale and Dutt Wagers. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Starr for all his help in getting Clovis home. They would also like to thank the hospice nurses, Carolyn, Nina, Suzanne, and Joy.
