Clyde "Eddie" Roberts, born February 18, 1946 in Rogersville, TN, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 22, 2011, and went to be with the Lord.
Eddie was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and received a Bachelors Degree in Education. He later completed his Masters Degree in Education at East Tennessee State University. Eddie was previously employed by Church Hill High School, Cedar Grove Elementary and Kingsport Press. He attended Blountville Church of God.
Eddie is remembered as three-time Golden Glove Champion, fighting twenty professional bouts; with a career record of 14-5 and one draw. He was a role model and older brother to many fatherless children in local public housing. Eddie the "Boxer", the college graduate, songwriter and poet, the musician, the teacher, the coach, and involved leader of the Kingsport Boys Club, a Civil War buff, a friend, and all in all, a kind "Tri-Cities Legend."
He was preceded in death by parents, Howard Young Roberts and Annie Jewel Roberts; daughter, Lissa Byrd Hubbard; and stepson, John Henry Morelock.
Survivors include his daughter, Caroline Roberts Roller, of Kingsport; grandchildren, Jennifer Arnold, and husband Lee, Jessica Roller Lane and Husband Wesley, Summer Slogar, Meredith Roller, Madison Morelock, Ava Arnold, Emmaleigh Arnold, Johnathon Morelock and wife Whitney, Scotty Roller, Layton Crawford, and Payton Morelock; brothers, Frankie Joe Jody Roberts, Howard Lee Roberts, Larry R. Gordon and wife Ginger; sisters, Vonda Kay Hager and husband Wallace, Faye Frost and husband Steve, Cynthia Willis Cookie and husband David, Beth Osbourne, all of kingsport; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00pm with Pastor Leighton C. Roberts and Pastor Hal Calhoun officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00pm Wednesday at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.
