David Alton Powell

David Alton Powell, 65, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2016, surrounded by family at the home he designed and built in Sullivan County in1982. David was born April 1, 1951 in Bristol, VA to the late Charles "Charlie" Powell and the late Jean Harper Powell. He was a member of the first graduating class of Sullivan East High School, and received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with High Honors from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1974. After school, David worked for Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas for 5 years. He returned to the Tri-Cities where he worked for Eastman Chemical Company for 30 years until he retired in 2009. He completed his career as a Capital Project Manager for Worldwide Engineering & Construction. David was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport. He was an avid golfer, who found joy in the challenge golf presented. He felt at home in the hills and mountains of Tennessee and shared this passionate for hiking and camping with his children.

David was preceded in death by his father, Charles "Charlie" Powell; his mother, Jean Powell; his brother Charles Powell; his grandparents, Charles P. Powell, Pearl Alice (Parks) Powell, Alton Tillman Harper, and Beatrice Edith (Wilson) Harper.

David is survived by his wife, Jeanna Humphreys Powell, of 43 years; his sons, Ian Powell and wife Hannah Powell and Brian Powell; one daughter, Heather Hubble and husband Robert Hubble; two siblings, Bill Powell and Mary Rouanzion; four grandchildren, Alton Powell, Duncan Powell, Alaina Hubble, and Robert Hubble Jr; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, November 14, 2016 at 10am at East Lawn Cemetery's Garden of the Good Shepherd with Rev. Mitchell Whisnant.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund at First Baptist Church Kingsport.
