David Onsby Baker, 62, of Church Hill, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010, after a motorcycle accident. David was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a long-time member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. David served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969 1973 as an aircraft mechanic and spent 3 months overseas during the Vietnam Conflict. While in the Air Force, David attended the College of William and Mary, completing his education at ETSU, where he received his Bachelor's Degree. He retired from Eastman, where he worked in the Filter Products Department. He most recently worked for Blue Ridge Properties at the Lynn Garden office.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Onsby Fletcher and Goldie Potter Baker.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Shirley Baker; daughter Kelly Hammonds and husband, Steve, of Mt. Carmel; grandchildren, Austin and Abbey Hammonds, Mt. Carmel; sisters, Wilma Baker, Surgoinsville, and Barbara Riley, Spencerport, NY; brother, Lionel Baker and wife, Jennie, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, H. K. Stapleton.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will follow at 8:00, with Rev. Wayne Baker, Rev. Robert Coffey, and Rev. J. W. Depew officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday at 11:00 at Church Hill Memory Gardens, with military rites by American Legion Posts #3/265. Serving as pallbearers will be Austin Hammonds, Harry Claman, Chad Salyer, and Larry Coomer. Honorary pallbearers are Buckie Baker, Richard Stroop, and Michael Brew.
