David Bateman Overbey, beloved and devoted husband, father and grandfather, U. S. Navy Veteran of World War II and Korea, native of Sullivan County, and long-time member of Litz Manor Baptist Church, died peacefully Sunday, November 6, surrounded by his family. Mr. Overbey was 90 years old.
David had served as a deacon at Litz Manor Church, was a member of the varsity basketball team of Sullivan High School, a U. S. Navy veteran having served as a Gunner's Mate, 2nd Class on the USS Boyle in World War II in the European, African and Asiatic Theatres and USS Rowe, Gunner's Mate 1st Class, during the Korean War. He retired as Pilot Plant Operator at Tennessee Eastman Company after 44 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his father, David Bateman Overbey, Sr.; mother, Minnie Alice Gooden Overbey; three brothers; three sisters; and niece, Peggy Martin.
David is survived by his wife of more than 64 years, Edith Russell Overbey of Kingsport; sons, D. Russell Overbey & wife, Carolyn of Knoxville, Douglas Overbey & wife, Kay of Maryville; granddaughters, Kathleen Thomas and husband, Ryan of Nashville, Elizabeth Thomason and husband, Matt of Jacksonville, FL, and Hannah Millard of Maryville; niece, Martha Martin & husband, Earl of Gray, TN.
The family extends a special thanks to the doctors and nurses of the step-down ICU at Holston Valley Medical Center and the pastor and members of Litz Manor Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 8th, 2011 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Litz Manor Baptist Church with Pastor Chris Alford officiating.
Entombment services will follow at Oak Hill Mausoleum with military honors conducted by American Legion Posts #3/265. Pallbearers will be the men of Litz Manor Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Martin, Harding Addington, Glen Wampler, Sam Padgett, Don Russell and Charles Christian.
