David Martin Pond

David Martin Pond, 67, of Kingsport, TN, passed away on Tuesday May 25th 2010 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born September 14, 1942 in Washington, DC, son of the Flora Elizabeth Heins Pond of Kingsport, TN, and the late Morris Fullerton Pond. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1964 and received his doctorate from the University of South Carolina in 1968. After a Post-doctoral Fellowship at Columbia University in New York City, he moved to Kingsport in 1970 to begin his career at Eastman Chemical Company. He retired from Eastman as Vice President of Research in 2003 and served as the managing director of the USC NanoCenter in Columbia, SC, for three years. He returned to Kingsport and enjoyed traveling, gardening, golf and woodworking.

He is survived by his mother, Flora Elizabeth Heins Pond; his wife of 43 years, Susan Matthews Pond; his daughter and son-in-law, Alycen and Steve Nigro and their two children Sam and Cate of Acton, MA; his daughter, Anne Linton Pond of Overland Park, KS; and his son and daughter-in-law, David and Brooks Pond and their son Daniel of Kingsport, TN. He is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Johanna Pond of Williamsburg, VA, along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 28th at 1:00 PM at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Strictly for Hunger Fund or the Friendship Diner Fund at First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
