Dennis H. Laney, 87, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born in Wise County, VA, he had resided in Kingsport for most of his life having retired from Mason Dixon Truck Lines in 1984 after 30 years of service. Following his retirement from Mason Dixon, he was owner of Tool Services and Repair for 18 years until retiring at the age of 74.
Dennis was an active member of Orebank Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving as a deacon, Trustee, and Sunday School Teacher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II aboard the USS Shea. He was a loving and devoted family man and a friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Lula Reed Laney; one brother, Alfred Laney; one sister, Erma Thacker who went to be with the Lord on the same day as her brother, Dennis; and in-laws, Henry and Eliza Hobbs.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Joyce Laney, Kingsport; one daughter, Denise Clark and husband, David, Kingsport; one son, Rusty Laney and wife, Liz, Kingsport; four grandchildren, Becky Rowe and husband, Daniel, David Laney and wife, Erica, Amy Lawson and husband, Kenny, and Beth Clabaugh and husband, Hank; six great-grandchildren, Olivia and Grayson Rowe, Caroline and Hudson Clabaugh, Caden and Ava Laney, and a special great-grandchild due in the spring; two sisters, Billie Jordan, Wise, VA, Ruth Forstner and husband, Al, Richmond, VA; one brother, Bobby Laney and wife Shirley, Kingsport; and several special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Orebank Missionary Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Mike Jordan and Pastor David Foster officiating.
The graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at 1:00 pm at East Lawn Memorial Park with Military Honors performed by American Legion Posts #3/265. Pallbearers will be David Clark, Kenny Lawson, Daniel Rowe, Hank Clabaugh, David Laney, and Bud Slusher.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
