Donald Albert Maxwell, was born February 17, 1923 in Chicago, IL. He was the son of Albert Francis Maxwell and Mary Hazel Farlow. They moved to Kingsport when Don was three years of age.
Don was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. He attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, and graduated from Tusculum College and the University of Mississippi. He retired from Eastman after 36 years of service as a chemist.
He was a faithful member of Bethany Presbyterian Church and a long-term member of Warrior's Path Volunteer Fire Department. Don served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator and mechanic for three years. He received the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Louise Jordan, after 58 years of marriage. Also, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Belle Maxwell, of Charlotte, NC; a son, Roy Albert Maxwell, of Kingsport; daughter-in-law, Vicki Maxwell; and two granddaughters, Maria Ann and Emily Rose Maxwell. Other survivors include a brother, Lawrence K. Maxwell, of Union Springs, AL; brother-in-law, James E. Jordan, of Afton, TN; three nephews and one niece, all of AL.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Chuck Echols officiating.
Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Stone Dam Cemetery in Afton, TN. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #3/265.
Pallbearers will be Kurt Stevenson, George Witherspoon, Bill Gothard, Bob Shaffer, John Hurt, and Mike Lee. Honorary pallbearers will be James E. Jordan and Howard Overbay.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Wellmont Hospice House, P.O. Box 238, Kingsport, TN 37662 or to the cancer research center of ones choice.
