Donald K. Wetzel, 79, of Kingsport passed away at home on Friday morning May 15, 2010 following an extended illness.
Don was born in Norristown, PA, and resided in Kingsport for the last 12 years. He graduated from Jones College, Orlando, FL. His great joy in life was his dedication to his country through 31 years of service in the United States Navy. Don retired in 1985 as the Command Master Chief on the USS Carl Vinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Mary Wetzel; two brothers, Robert Wetzel and Herbert Wetzel, Jr.; and nephew Kenneth Wetzel.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Ruth Wetzel of Kingsport; one son, Donald "Ken" Wetzel Jr. of Florida; two daughters, Donna Costello and husband, Hank of Georgia and Dory Creech and husband, Greg of Kingsport; grandchildren, Peter Costello and wife, Ashley of Georgia, Patrick Costello and wife, Rachel of Illinois, Christy Free and husband, Travis of Kingsport, Jamie Creech of Knoxville, Matthew Creech and fiancée, Kara of Knoxville; three great grandchildren; Addison Costello, Mason Costello, and Parker Free; sister-in-law Dorothy Wetzel of Pennsylvania; and nephew, David Wetzel of Pennsylvania.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday May 22, 2010 at 1:30 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with the Pastor Steve Counts officiating. There will be a reception following the service. A Naval burial will take place at sea.
