Cherished wife, mother and grandmother, Doris Jeannine Holmes Garfield died at home in Kingsport on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. She was born in Plasterco, VA on June 16, 1929, the eldest of four daughters of Virginia L. and William L. Holmes. Doris grew up in Saltville, Big Stone Gap, Gate City, and Bristol, VA, graduating from Virginia High School, where she was crowned Miss Virginia High VIII. She then attended Sullins College and the Nursing Program at the University of Virginia, where she was a member of the Thomas Jefferson Society and graduated in 1950 with an RN degree. At UVA she met medical student Claude R. Garfield. They were married in 1950, and he has remained her loving and devoted husband of 62 years.
Doris was preceded in death by her father, mother and grandmother.
She died surrounded by family and friends who had tenderly cared for her for five years: husband, Dr. Claude R. Garfield; three adoring children, Deborah, David and Michael Garfield, and Michael's wife, Karen; giving sisters, Nancy Davis and Judy Hooper, and their husbands, Robert and Michael; niece, Allyson Hooper Burke; and compassionate caretakers, Sandy Carey and Kathy Fletcher. Doris is also survived by her sister Jane Froeschle and husband James; granddaughters Megan and Mallory Garfield; and a large and loving group of nephews, nieces and friends.
The Garfields thank Comfort Keepers, Amedisys, and other caregivers for their heartfelt dedication.
Family members will greet friends on Sunday, March 17, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Crown Colony Clubhouse, 20 Crown Circle, Kingsport TN 37660.
