Doris B. Miller died Friday, January 25, 2019, at Asbury Place, where she and her husband lived. She was born August 26, 1921, in Glen Elder, Kansas, to Georgia Sloan Baird and Ernest Earl Baird. After living in Kansas for four years, the family moved to Lake Wales, Florida, where she grew up. She graduated from Lake Wales High School and attended Erskine College. Doris worked as a secretary in Charlotte, NC, and Lake Wales until her marriage to Robert W. Miller on May 22, 1943. The young couple lived in Washington DC, during WWII and later moved to Chapel Hill, NC, while her husband finished graduate school at the University of North Carolina. Following this, they moved to Kingsport, TN, where her husband worked for Eastman. Mrs. Miller was a charter member of Preston Hills Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, elder and Clerk of Session, and was active in Presbyterian Women. She enjoyed work and was a volunteer at Holston Valley Medical Center for 40 years and over 8,000 hours. During this time, she served as President of the Auxiliary and on the Hospital Board of Directors. On May 22, 2018, she and her husband celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Earl S. Baird; and an infant son, John S. Miller.
Doris is survived by her husband, Robert Miller; and four children, Betty Anne Smith and husband Henry of Florence, SC, Robin Miller and partner, Lynne Turner of Richmond, VA, Henry Miller and wife, Terry of Vienna, VA, and Nancy Pollard and husband Ed of Corona del Mar, CA; ten grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Following cremation, her ashes will be interred in the family plot at the Old Purity Cemetery in Chester, SC.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Preston Hills Presbyterian Church, Orebank Road. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Miller Family Scholarship at Erskine College, Due West, SC 29639, or to the Memorial Fund, Preston Hills Presbyterian Church, 4701 Orebank Rd., Kingsport, TN 37664.
She will always be remembered for her love, support, and devotion to her family, and her graciousness and kindness to a wide circle of friends.
