Doris Evelyn Abernathy Rogers of Kingsport passed away on Tuesday, July 22 at Preston Place II, ending a life of love and dedication to her family and friends.
Mrs. Rogers was born in Dandridge, Tennessee on June 27, 1930 and was the second daughter of Carl Linton Abernathy and Winnie Atchley Abernathy. She grew up in Dandridge, an idyllic childhood that gave her many comforting memories in her later years. She graduated from Maury High School and from Carson-Newman College, where she received a degree in Music. She also did graduate work at Peabody College.
Mrs. Rogers married Malcolm Emory Rogers of Alabama in 1952. Dr. Rogers passed away in March 2013. The young Rogers family lived in Nashville; Milwaukee; Norfolk; Norman, Oklahoma and Fayetteville, North Carolina as Dr. Rogers pursued his career as a naval medical officer. In 1960, Dr. and Mrs. Rogers researched and selected Kingsport as the ideal place to raise their active and growing family of four boys.
The Rogers joined First Broad Street United Methodist Church in 1961, where Mrs. Rogers taught second grade Sunday School for over 20 years. She was also a long-time member of the Kingsport Garden Club. In addition to her devotion to her husband, sons and later to her grandchildren, Mrs. Rogers was an accomplished gardener and enjoyed bicycling, playing tennis, music, and the study of nature.
Mrs. Rogers is survived by four sons and their families, Malcolm Rogers of Knoxville, Tom Rogers and wife Jenny, Bill Rogers and wife Allyson, and Bob Rogers and wife Lisa, all of Kingsport. After raising four sons, Mrs. Rogers was delighted to add seven granddaughters and three grandsons to the family. They are Tom's children Ben and Andy Rogers and Kelli Rogers Trent; Bill's children Sam, Evelyn, Emma and Elise; and Bob's children Josie, Ruthie and Willa. She is also survived by her sister Polly Quarles and husband Lavern of Jefferson City and their children Jan and Brent Quarles.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Preston Place II for all their kindness.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 5:00 pm at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Mickey Rainwater officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
