Dorman L. Stout, Sr., 83, died peacefully at his Baysmont home on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 after suffering several lengthy illnesses. He was born in Whitley County, KY on February 25, 1935; later moved to Clinton, TN and eventually resided in Kingsport where he graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and the University of Tennessee. He met and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Jordan, at UT and they remained married for 62 years. After graduating from UT Law School, he began practicing law in Kingsport in 1959 and quickly became involved in civic activities including President of the Kingsport Jaycees, coach of football, baseball and basketball at the Boys Club, was a volunteer assistant coach of baseball at D-B, acted in Kingsport Theater Guild, was actively involved at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, received the honor of Jaycees Outstanding Young Man of the Year award and was also honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. As he phased out of practicing law with the firm of Wilson, Worley, Moore, Gamble and Stout, the Kingsport Bar Association presented him with a well- deserved "Lifetime of Service to the Legal Profession" award and he was also inducted into the Kingsport Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame. Friends knew him as an avid Atlanta Braves fan and active supporter of the UT Vols. His favorite pastimes included tennis, skiing, traveling, spending time with his grandchildren and attending Barter Theatre.
Dorman was preceded in death by his parents, James A. "Dick" and Martha Stout and daughter, Rebecca Stout Birch.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Jordan Stout; sons, Lamarr (Susie) Knoxville, TN and Jim (Becky B.) Jefferson City, TN; grandchildren, Melissa Stout, Bloomington, IN, Sarah Jordan Stout, Houston, TX, Abby Stout Hendrix (Jon) Charlotte, NC, James Stout, Jackson Hole, WY; son-in-law Garry Birch, Kingsport, brother-in-law Forrest Jordan, San Antonio, TX and his special friends at "Table 18".
A private service for interment of ashes will be held Thursday, July 12 with a memorial service to follow at 5:00 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Dan Matthews, The Rev. Anna Brawley, and The Rev. Jay Mills officiating. Receiving of friends will immediately follow in the church fellowship hall (Berndt Hall).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Dorman to the Rebecca Stout Birch Scholarship Fund at St. Paul's Day School, 160 E. Sevier Ave., Kingsport, TN 37660, or to the Kingsport Boys and Girls Club, 1 Positive Pl., Kingsport, TN 37660.
