Dorothea Irene Holmes

Dorothea “Dot” Holmes, 85, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020, at her home in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

She resided in Kingsport, TN, practically all of her life and was a 1952 graduate of Sullivan High School. Dot was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, wife, and daughter. She was a member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church for most of her life. Throughout her life, she was an employee of Mason & Dixon Lines, Sullivan South High School, and Sears Payment Systems (CITI). She was a lifelong volunteer as a PTA member, band parent, church office assistant, and prayer warrior.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents, Burnie and Addie Burgess; step-mother, Nelle Burgess; husband, George “Smokey” Holmes; sister, Martha Childress; and brother-in-law, Carl Childress. She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Thrasher and husband, Mark, Bowling Green, KY; grandchildren, Jessica Thrasher and Brandon Thrasher; nieces, Carla Childress and partner, Julie Eldridge, Kingsport, Alice Crowley and husband, Artell, Nantucket, MA, Dottie Stump and husband, Mark, Johnson City, and Sheri Holmes and partner Leslie Martinez, Johnson City; nephew Dennis Holmes and wife, Cindy, Blountville; several other nieces and nephews; and many friends who felt like family.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Sunday, March 1, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, March 2, at Hamlett-Dobson, followed by the graveside service at East Tennessee Cemetery, with Rev. Randall Wright officiating.

Pallbearers will be Mark Thrasher, Brandon Thrasher, Zachary Stump, Dennis Holmes, Jonathan Bailey, and Spencer Ghee.
